Origins of the Jiang surname
Tradition traces 蒋 to the state of Jiang, a small Zhou dynasty fief whose capital lay in what is now Gushi County, Henan. The story goes that the Duke of Zhou gave the land to his fourth son, Bo Ling (伯龄), who later took the name of the state as his surname. The state was annexed by its powerful neighbour Chu in 617 BC.
Behind the Name accordingly classes 蒋 as a surname from a place, taken from the old state of Jiang rather than from a descriptive word. Chinese clan tradition adds other ancestors: one hall name, Zhongshan (钟山), recalls Jiang Ziwen, an Eastern Han official at Moling (today’s Nanjing) for whom the ruler Sun Quan later built a temple on Zhongshan (钟山) in Nanjing. In the classic surname primer the *Hundred Family Surnames*, 蒋 comes 13th.
The surname was also given to or adopted by other groups over the centuries. Wikipedia notes its use among the Zhuang, Miao, Tujia, Lahu and Yao peoples, and its adoption by some Mongols in the Yuan dynasty.[3][4][10][5]

Jiang is the official pinyin spelling on the mainland. Outside it, the same surname often appears as Chiang, which is also used for 姜 and 江, so a Chiang may be any of the three.[1][3][11]

Where the Jiang surname is most common
In the Ministry of Public Security’s 2019 list of the 100 most common surnames, 蒋 ranked 39th, just ahead of the two Yu surnames, 余 and 于. Together, the top 100 surnames cover 85.9% of China’s registered population, out of more than 6,000 surnames in use.
Figures from the Fuxi Institution for 2013 put the Jiang (蒋) population at about 6.32 million, or 0.48% of the population, with Sichuan the province with the most bearers.
Chinese Wikipedia sketches how the name spread: before the Qin dynasty it was concentrated in today’s Henan; after Chu absorbed the state of Jiang most of the family moved away, and from the Eastern Han it was scattered south of the Yangtze. Jiangs reached Fujian in the early Tang, Guangdong by the Song and Taiwan from the late Ming.[1][2][5]
