_Three different Chinese surnames are all written Jiang in pinyin. The biggest is 蒋 (Jiǎng), No. 39 in the 2019 national list; the other two are 姜, ‘ginger’, and 江, ‘river’. ## Short answer

Jiang (蒋, traditional 蔣, Jiǎng) is a Chinese surname named after the ancient state of Jiang in today’s Henan. It was the 39th most common surname in China in 2019. Two other surnames are also spelled Jiang in pinyin: 姜 (‘ginger’, No. 54) and 江 (‘river’, No. 75).

## Origins of the Jiang surname

Tradition traces 蒋 to the **state of Jiang**, a small Zhou dynasty fief whose capital lay in what is now Gushi County, Henan. The story goes that the Duke of Zhou gave the land to his fourth son, **Bo Ling** (伯龄), who later took the name of the state as his surname. The state was annexed by its powerful neighbour Chu in 617 BC.

Behind the Name accordingly classes 蒋 as a surname from a place, taken from the old state of Jiang rather than from a descriptive word. Chinese clan tradition adds other ancestors: one hall name, **Zhongshan** (钟山), recalls Jiang Ziwen, an Eastern Han official at Moling (today’s Nanjing) for whom the ruler Sun Quan later built a temple on Zhongshan (钟山) in Nanjing. In the classic surname primer the *Hundred Family Surnames*, 蒋 comes 13th.

The surname was also given to or adopted by other groups over the centuries. Wikipedia notes its use among the Zhuang, Miao, Tujia, Lahu and Yao peoples, and its adoption by some Mongols in the Yuan dynasty.

## Where the Jiang surname is most common

In the Ministry of Public Security’s 2019 list of the 100 most common surnames, 蒋 ranked **39th**, just ahead of the two Yu surnames, [余 and 于](/culture/chinese-surnames/yu). Together, the top 100 surnames cover 85.9% of China’s registered population, out of more than 6,000 surnames in use.

Figures from the Fuxi Institution for 2013 put the Jiang (蒋) population at about **6.32 million**, or 0.48% of the population, with **Sichuan** the province with the most bearers.

Chinese Wikipedia sketches how the name spread: before the Qin dynasty it was concentrated in today’s Henan; after Chu absorbed the state of Jiang most of the family moved away, and from the Eastern Han it was scattered south of the Yangtze. Jiangs reached Fujian in the early Tang, Guangdong by the Song and Taiwan from the late Ming.

## Questions

**What does the Jiang surname mean?**

蒋 (Jiǎng) takes its name from the ancient state of Jiang in present-day Henan, so as a surname it means ‘from Jiang’ rather than having an everyday meaning. The other Jiang surnames do have meanings: 姜 is ‘ginger’ and 江 is ‘river’.

**Is Jiang a Chinese last name?**

Yes. 蒋 Jiang was the 39th most common surname in China in the Ministry of Public Security’s 2019 list, and 姜 (No. 54) and 江 (No. 75) are also common Chinese surnames spelled Jiang.

**How common is the Jiang surname in China?**

Fuxi Institution figures for 2013 put 蒋 at about 6.32 million people (0.48% of the population), most of them in Sichuan. 姜 had about 5.23 million and 江 about 3.69 million.

**How do you pronounce Jiang?**

Roughly ‘jyahng’, as one syllable. 蒋 is said with the third tone, which dips and rises; 姜 and 江 are said with a high, level first tone.

**Is Chiang the same as Jiang?**

Chiang is an older spelling of the same sound, common in Taiwan and abroad. It can stand for 蒋, 姜 or 江, so the surname Chiang does not tell you which character a family uses.

**Where does the Jiang surname come from?**

Tradition traces 蒋 to the state of Jiang, given by the Duke of Zhou to his fourth son Bo Ling, who took the state’s name as his surname. The state, centred on today’s Gushi County in Henan, was annexed by Chu in 617 BC.

**Are 蒋, 姜 and 江 related?**

No. They are separate surnames with different characters, tones and origins, even though all three are written Jiang in pinyin and often Chiang abroad.
