## Origins of the Yuan surname

Traditional sources trace the name to **Yuan Taotu**, a nobleman of a junior branch of the ruling family of the ancient state of **Chen**, in about the 7th century BC. He is said to have taken the second character of his grandfather’s courtesy name, Boyuan (伯爰), as a family name. He was given land at **Yangjia** (阳夏), in today’s Taikang county, Henan, which is regarded as the ancestral home of the Yuan.

Through Chen’s rulers, Yuan families could claim descent from the legendary sage-emperor **Shun**. A less widely accepted theory links the name to Xuanyuan (轩辕), the clan name of the Yellow Emperor.

The written form settled as 袁 by the 1st century AD. The Shuowen dictionary defines it as ‘a long garment’, but that meaning had already fallen out of use, and today the character is used almost only as a surname. In the Hundred Family Surnames (百家姓) it comes 59th.
