## Monkey compatibility: best and worst matches

Traditional matching, which some couples in China still take into account, uses three rules. [2][3][5][6]

| Rule | Match for the Monkey | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 三合 (sānhé), trio | Rat and Dragon | Animals four years apart; the most harmonious |
| 六合 (liùhé), pair | Snake | A secret friend; a good match |
| 六冲 (liùchōng), clash | Tiger | Six years apart, opposite on the wheel; traditionally avoided |

## What the Monkey means in Chinese culture

The Monkey’s most famous representative is Sun Wukong, the Monkey King of Journey to the West. In Chinese art the monkey is also a pun for success: 猴 (hóu) sounds like 侯 (hóu), a noble title.

A monkey started China’s best-known stamp series. The 1980 Gengshen Monkey stamp, painted by Huang Yongyu, cost 8 fen; only 4.43 million were printed, and a full sheet of 80 later sold for close to ¥1.5 million. China Post has issued a zodiac stamp every year since.

## How many babies are born in Monkey years in China?

| Monkey year | Births in China | Year before | Year after |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| 2016 | 17.86 million | 16.55 million (2015) | 17.23 million (2017) |

Calendar-year births from China’s National Bureau of Statistics, as first published. A zodiac year starts at Lunar New Year, so it overlaps two calendar years.

> **Note: Born in January or February?**
>
> Check the date: someone born on 15 Jan 2016 belongs to the Goat, not the Monkey, because the Year of the Monkey began on 8 Feb 2016. The [zodiac calculator](/tools/chinese-zodiac-calculator) works it out for any birth date.
