No. 1 · Hot pot

Hot pot is the dish most often named as China’s most popular meal, followed closely by dumplings and noodles. What people eat day to day is regional: rice dominates the south, wheat noodles and buns the north, and chilli-heavy dishes Sichuan and Chongqing. This ranking blends search, social and menu signals and is illustrative.

How is the most popular food in China measured?

There is no official national ranking. We combine search interest on Baidu and Google, mentions on Xiaohongshu and Douyin, and how often a dish appears on delivery-app menus. Each signal is normalised and weighted. Until our data pipeline is live, the order on this page is illustrative.

What do people in China eat every day?

Everyday food is simpler than restaurant food: rice or noodles, a stir-fried vegetable, a meat or tofu dish and soup. Breakfast is quick and bought on the street. Hot pot and Peking duck are social occasions, not weekday staples.

What are the three main foods in China?

Rice, wheat (noodles, buns, dumplings) and pork are the three most common answers. Rice dominates south of the Yangtze; wheat dominates the north.
