1. Octopus card: rent or buy one at any MTR Customer Service Centre when you arrive. Octopus on iPhone can be topped up with a foreign Visa, Mastercard or UnionPay card in the Octopus App for Tourists.
2. Tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or UnionPay card at the gates that show the card logos (not every gate has them). Airport Express gates have taken bank cards and QR codes since 31 May 2026.
3. Scan a transit QR code from Alipay, AlipayHK, WeChat Pay, WeChat Pay HK or the UnionPay app at gates with purple stickers. Choose the passenger type before you enter.
4. Or buy a single-journey ticket at the station machines.

Fares

Each journey has its own fare set by MTR, not a distance formula, so we do not estimate it; ticket machines show it before you pay. The Airport Express and East Rail Line First Class cost more. With an Alipay or WeChat Pay transit code, the adult fare is the same as the adult Octopus fare.

Tips

• Need help? Station staff can help in English, and all signs and announcements are in Chinese and English.
• Changes are usually short; at Mong Kok and Prince Edward the Tsuen Wan and Kwun Tong lines meet across the same platform.
• Central and Hong Kong stations, and Tsim Sha Tsui and East Tsim Sha Tsui, are joined by underground passages. With a QR code, the Tsim Sha Tsui change counts as two separate journeys.
• East Rail Line trains have a First Class car that costs extra. With a QR code, choose First Class before you enter the gate.
• First and last trains differ by line and station. Check the board at the entrance, especially for late trips to the airport.
