Strangers flood a Yunnan village for an orphaned blogger’s wedding
小小徐婚宴食材按千斤算
A 24-year-old blogger who grew up without parents asked people online to help fill his wedding tables, and visitors from across China arrived with food, livestock and gifts.
In short
Xu Chenghong, a 24-year-old blogger known online as “Xiaoxiaoxu”, posted a Douyin video on 25 October inviting people to his wedding on 31 October in Luowang, Yiliang County, Yunnan, because he had few relatives. Visitors from around China came with pigs, cattle and tonnes of vegetables, and volunteer chefs helped feed them. Local hotels filled up and the banquet switched to a buffet.
Why he asked strangers
Xu’s father died of illness when he was three, and his mother remarried when he was five. He and his brother, three years older, were raised by their grandmother, who died two years later. Both brothers left junior high school to go out to work. Xu saved more than ¥160,000 (roughly US$23,000) for the bride price and the gold jewellery that rural Chinese weddings traditionally include. He met his fiancée online, and they had been together for three years.
In a video on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, he said he had so few relatives that his family could fill only a few tables, and invited people to come and make the wedding look less empty. He told reporters that this was the whole reason for the video and that he had not expected many people to come.[1][2][4]
What happened next
The video spread quickly. Xu said he had received nearly 200 visitors in two days by 27 October, and the number kept growing. Plans for 300 sit-down tables, possibly 400, were dropped, and the meals became a buffet in a village square. Hotels in Luowang told Red Star News reporters on 30 October that they had no rooms left, and restaurant owners said business was several times higher than usual, like the Spring Festival.
Visitors brought food as well as good wishes. A woman from Anyue County in Sichuan drove a pig of more than 150 kg through the night; a man from Zhaotong gave a tricycle worth nearly ¥6,000 (about US$900) for the narrow rural roads; and a cattle farmer from Muchuan, Leshan, delivered two cows worth ¥20,000 (about US$3,000). Piles of spring onions, rice, water and 1.2 tonnes of apples built up at the registration point.[1][2][3]
Feeding the crowd
Volunteer chefs travelled in to help, including a team that said it holds five-star hotel cooking credentials. The square banquet’s head chef, Jia Xionglu, said the kitchen stewed 2 tonnes of chicken with tianma, a medicinal root often cooked in Yunnan chicken soup, on 29 October alone. More than 100 chefs and about 200–300 helpers worked in shifts, serving food from 10 am to 10 pm, and the night before the meal ran past 2 am on about 50 stoves.
The wedding coordinator, Mr Yang, told Jimu News that the crowd was beyond anything he had imagined and that he had worked until 2 or 3 am for three days running. Xu’s fiancée said the couple had received everyone’s good wishes and felt very touched.[1][2][3]
