Rizhao fishermen land a 134 kg ‘king’ Spanish mackerel
山东日照捕获260余斤“鲅鱼王”
A fishing boat from Rizhao, Shandong, caught a Spanish mackerel about ten times the size locals usually see.
In short
On 25 October 2026 a fishing boat from Taoluo town in Rizhao's Donggang district, Shandong, caught a Spanish mackerel (鲅鱼, bàyú) in the Yellow Sea measuring 2.46 metres and weighing 268 jin, about 134 kg. Inshore mackerel there usually weigh a few jin to just over ten. A local seafood-dumpling factory has bought the fish.
The catch
The fish was landed on 25 October by a boat from Taoluo, a fishing town on the coast of Rizhao, a port city in southern Shandong province. It was caught during legal fishing in the Yellow Sea and measured and weighed at the harbour: 2.46 metres long and 268 jin. The jin is the Chinese market unit of half a kilogram, so the fish weighed about 134 kg; early reports rounded it to “more than 260 jin”.
Older fishermen came to the harbour to see it and said a mackerel of this size is very rare off Rizhao, where inshore catches usually weigh a few jin to just over ten. Reports note that Spanish mackerel is an ordinary commercial fish in the Yellow and Bohai seas and is not a protected species.[1][2]
Why it ended up at a dumpling factory
The fish was bought by a local company that makes seafood dumplings. Spanish mackerel dumplings (鲅鱼水饺) are one of the best-known seafood dumplings of Shandong's Jiaodong coast: the flesh is cut from the backbone, skinned and chopped with ginger and a little Chinese chive.
First reports said this fish would be made into dumplings. A later report said that because it is so rare, the factory now plans to keep it as a specimen for display.[1][2][3]
